Sehun can’t stop staring at the ice cream bar. It’s one of those nice brands. Rich, silky chocolate that actually tastes like chocolate, beautiful gold wrapping. It reminds Sehun of things he’s only ever imagined for himself, seeing it gleam in the storefront window.
He considers stealing it. It would be smarter if he did, natural. But that’s not the way he wants to go about it, not this time. It might be smarter, but it wouldn’t be right.
So the last few coins are scraped out of his pockets and given away. The cashier glances at him kind of funny when they exchange. Maybe he’s wondering why Sehun isn’t in school, or why he’s wearing four layers on his back when it’s spring, or why there’s a faint layer of dirt underneath his fingernails. But Sehun never waits around for anyone to wonder too long. He’s already back on the street, hands shoved in his pockets, curled protectively around the treat.
His fingers grow cold fast. By the time he reaches the park and sits down on their bench, he has to shake out his fingers a bit to thaw. Slowly, he takes the ice cream bar out of his pocket, taking care not to mess anything up.
“Happy Birthday.”
The boy sitting next to Sehun looks surprised at first--and then all of a sudden that smile. So warm it feels like it’s being pressed straight into him, burrowing deep in his chest.
Yixing takes the bar from Sehun’s hand. “The big 18.”
“It should be a drink, to be honest.”
“No,” Yixing shakes his head, calmly breaking the bar in half and giving the other end of the stick to Sehun. “This is perfect. This is much better.” He falls quiet for a few moments, thoughtful. The smile is softer this time around as he gently taps his bar to Sehun’s.
“Cheers, Sehun.”
“Cheers, hyung.”
And it’s right.
