o9.

a holiday tradition
jongkey
688 words

kibum pushes some stray hair back from his forehead, standing back to admire the last of the decorations. it may be a little much for someone who practically lives alone, but he can't help himself. there's something about christmas that always lifts his spirits and there's nothing wrong with letting it show. not to mention it's the first time he'll be able to experience the holiday with someone else like this, and the thought brings a smile to his lips.

the apartment is calm and quiet but he's sure that it won't be like that for long. he's grown almost too sensitive to sounds now and he can hear the starts of rustling, a telltale scampering of little feet on the hardwood floor. he's expecting it but it still makes him laugh, the feeling of jonghyun tripping and excitedly running over and in between his feet. he's letting out a small chorus of high pitched "key! key!" like he hasn't seen him in days when in reality he was only asleep for about an hour.

kibum chuckles and picks him up carefully, making sure to keep a tight enough hold because jonghyun has a tendency to wiggle when he's excited and the last thing he wants to do is drop him. "hey buddy," he greets warmly. "what do you think of the decorations?"

jonghyun blinks at him curiously, looking around to take in the surroundings. his tail starts to wag back and forth and his ears twitch as his focus zones in on something above them. he points, kibum's gaze following and understanding the question even if jonghyun doesn't have the words to ask it yet.

"oh, that's called mistletoe. it's kind of a christmas tradition. if you get caught standing under it with someone, you're supposed to kiss them."

jonghyun's head tilts curiously and kibum laughs, leaning in to press a kiss on his cheek that gets his tail wagging faster and a warm flush on his skin.

kibum has to work late on christmas eve and he does his best to rush back home, trying to keep as warm as possible and holding onto a bag of last second impulse-bought sweets to share with jonghyun. he knows he'll be waiting and he always feels guilty for making him wait longer than usual. mentally he kicks himself and makes a reminder to get him a phone soon, now that he's sure he could learn how to use it.

it takes him a few tries to get his key in the door and manage to work it open, kicking his shoes off inside the door with a call of "jjong, i'm home!" it's not until he's unwrapped the extra winter layers and placed them neatly on the coat rack that he realizes something is ... different. the decorations are out and up, even if some of them are hung a little haphazardly, and he takes it in with a smile.

he's too caught up looking at everything to notice that a certain someone has made his way into the room, coming right up to kibum and throwing arms around his neck in a warm hug. his tail is wagging happily and he's curious to know if kibum will be happy with him, but he's satisfied with the way he hugs him back and laughs because the sound always warms him from the inside out.

"i put up the decorations," he says unnecessarily, which only makes kibum chuckle more. "i know. i love them."

when jonghyun pulls back and kibum can really look at him, it's almost hard to believe it's only been a year. just a year and he's grown so fast, so much, into something that he never could have expected.

just like he doesn't expect it when jonghyun is suddenly raising up onto his toes, planting a warm and soft kiss directly on his mouth. he smiles at the surprised look on kibum's face, ear twitching as he points above them to a familiar spot on the door frame.

"mistletoe," he says simply, and that's all that it takes for kibum to smile and kiss him again.
