it's hot as hell and chanyeol can tell that his tshirt is probably soaked through with sweat by the time that he's done loading up the trailer. he takes a seat on the grass, long legs stretched out in front of him and grabs for one of the water bottles from the cooler that aren't quite as cold as they could have been. it still feels like heaven when he takes long swallows, and he's seriously debating saving half of it to just pour over his head. summer music festivals are the best. he may even go so far as to say that he lives for them, for the atmosphere and the community and all of the opportunities that come with securing a slot.
it would just be a whole lot better if they could actually hire some kind of tech crew to help with hauling all of their shit around. he's not exactly a fan of sweating out half of his body weight every time something like this comes along, but baekhyun is too pretty to sweat and everyone knows it.
maybe his thoughts have some kind of weird summoning power, because as soon as it crosses his mind there's a familiar shadow stretching over him and a smaller boy plopping down next to him with more grace than should be possible.
baekhyun isn't sweating and he looks good just like he always does. chanyeol has known him since middle school and he's always felt that way. even with a few bad haircuts, even in a school uniform and before he had discovered eyeliner, baekhyun has always been one of the most beautiful things he's ever seen. now, he's older. he's filled out more but he's still small, delicate looking with a personality that sparks like a firecracker and a voice that's sinful in all of the best ways. chanyeol is too tall and too thin and too gangly with big ears and a deep voice that's always too loud even when he doesn't want it to be.
"so, first festival." baekhyun's voice is smooth just like the grin he throws in chanyeol's direction. chanyeol tips his head back to take another drink of water, letting it linger in his mouth and nodding. "who would've thought we'd hit it this big?"
chanyeol laughs, because he's right. they've been doing this for years but neither of them ever really thought that it would go anywhere. now they're living the dream and more than willing to ride it out as far as it'll take them.
"is yura coming?" the question is expected, because it's the same one he gets every time they have a gig. the same one he's been getting for years, even if sometimes it feels like it's been even longer. he shakes his head, fingers playing along the smooth plastic of the bottle and pressing in to make a crackling sound that fills the brief silence before he answers.
"she's busy. some kind of assignment or something. i told her i'd send pictures, though." chanyeol offers a smile and baekhyun doesn't seem to notice anything that might be off. just like always. chanyeol's the moodmaker, capable of brightening up any situation. of course he is, he's had years of this kind of practice.
"mm." baekhyun nods, leaning back and bracing his palms behind himself on the cool grass to tilt his head and enjoy the full benefits of an incoming breeze. "maybe she'll be able to catch up. maybe you'll finally let me take her out."
chanyeol snorts. "yeah right." baekhyun's words are a tease and so are his, but at the same time he knows they're both serious. baekhyun's had an eye on his sister ever since they were fifteen and nothing has changed. the way he looks at her is electric, the kind of thing he tries to tuck away and save for the nights that he can't sleep because his mind is too plagued with the what-ifs that he can't entertain otherwise.
"why not?" it's a question that's too familiar, because baekhyun has never been satisfied with any of his answers but it doesn't matter. chanyeol will keep coming up with them for as long as he can manage.
"because," he starts, giving a thoughtful pause and another drink to buy some time. the bottle is almost empty. "i know you. i just don't think it would work. i don't want to see her get hurt."
his eyes are down and he pushes up, wiping the grass and sweat from his palms onto his jeans. he swallows hard on nothing, hands shoved deep into his pockets as he ducks back into the trailer even though it's hot and miserable because that's easier than this. anything is easier than the possibility of his tongue letting loose and getting carried away, locking away the words (you can't date my sister because i'm in love with you) where nobody will stumble across them and open them up.
he'll bury it forever, because it's easier. he has to believe that.
