It’s him.

It hits Minseok slowly and all at once. His entire being halts, unmoving, as the others around him take immediate aim of the trio up ahead in the pass. Two short, unfamiliar men, and a third, lingering behind. He has long strides and slim arms picking through a branch of trees. The sunlight spins his hair golden, and for a split second Minseok thinks it’s all a mirage. A perfect, heartbreaking mirage.

His gun drops to the ground. There’s something clawing up his throat, there’s something burning inside of him, and he doesn’t think, doesn’t think at all while he’s racing because it’s him. It’s him it’s him it’s him God, please let it be him, please let this be real, Minseok needs this to be real, he needs it more than anything else he’s ever needed in his entire life.

“Luhan!”

He’s shaking so hard but he can’t stop, he can’t, he won’t. Running, tripping desperately over himself until something solid collides straight into his chest and brings him to his knees. They quickly collapse into each other, Luhan grasping whatever he can get his hands on while Minseok grabs him, pulling him into a crushing embrace. He’s holding onto him for dear life, holding onto this sobbing, broken Luhan with no intention of letting go, not once, not ever again.

It feels like he’s come back to life. Wide awake and terrified and relieved and so helplessly in love. He keeps repeating Luhan’s name, a private mantra, letting himself sink into that feeling. Letting himself simply hold his boyfriend, stroking back the hair from his forehead, slowly rocking the still shaking from. He’s okay. He’s alive. This is real.

Somewhere along the way it dawns on him. The weight of it is crushing, overwhelming beyond belief, but for the first time in weeks he can finally breathe.

He isn’t too late this time.
